The need for in-home caregivers has increased as more people in our area have reached their senior years. Maybe you have considered a career as a senior caregiver, but you’re not entirely sure what to expect from the role, or if you are even qualified. We have good news! Even without prior experience as an in-home caregiver, you can still qualify for this rewarding career!

Ideally, care professionals share common character traits in their role, such as compassion, dependability, patience, and a desire to make a difference in their local communities. They come from a broad range of backgrounds and are attracted to caregiving as a result of the career’s flexibility, variety, and service-oriented nature.

So, what can you expect day to day as a caregiver? While agendas change from one day to the next and among clients (that’s part of what makes it interesting!), here’s a sampling of what a typical day might look like.

If you are scheduled for a morning shift, your day will probably begin with helping the person get up out of bed, dressed, and prepared for the day. You’ll help prepare breakfast, tidy up afterwards, and maybe discuss the plan for the day with the older adult.

Later in the morning is a good time to run errands together and take care of a bit of housework. Toward the afternoon, it’ll be time to make lunch and enjoy more quality time together.

Later into the afternoon, you can spend time participating in enjoyable activities like putting together a puzzle with the senior or reminiscing through an old photo album, or any other activity that appeals to the individual. A caregiver’s evening routine might mean arriving in time to prepare dinner and talk with the senior about his or her day, and then cleaning up and participating in some evening activities. You may watch a movie together, create a craft, or read a book out loud.

Bedtime means helping the senior with a bath or shower, oral hygiene, and getting dressed for bed. When you leave the residence, you’ll be responsible for locking the door and ensuring the home is safe and secure for your sleeping client.
